MPs Call For Support For News Media

Scores of MPs from across the political spectrum, including Ministers and members of Cabinet, have called on Government to support the news media industry and local newspapers amid the coronavirus outbreak. 

In a cross party joint letter today, 23 MPs from across Yorkshire called on Chancellor Rishi Sunak to launch an advertising campaign with public health information in local news media, and extend the business rates holiday to news media - two key industry asks to Government.    

MPs, including Education Secretary Gavin Williamson, have also called for local authorities not to suspend permits for under 18s to deliver newspapers so that people can continue to receive vital trusted news and information during the crisis.

The News Media Association is compiling a dossier of all the quotes which it has submitted to DCMS and will continue to add to over the coming days and weeks.   

MPs have also highlighted the vital role played by news media in providing the public with trusted news and information during the crisis, and in campainging for local businesses.
